About the National Breech Society of Canada
The National Breech Society of Canada (NBSC) was formed in 2024 to support the reclamation and restoration of physiologic vaginal breech birth within midwifery scope of care across Canada. As midwifery legislation and regulation continue to move towards supporting the International Confederation of Midwives Essential Competencies for Midwifery Practice (2024), more Canadian midwives are accessing advanced training opportunities in order to competently and safely incorporate planned vaginal breech birth into their scope of practice and ensure that birthing families retain their rights to informed decision making.
The greatest push to reclaim vaginal breech birth within Canada has occurred within British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario due to increased community demand and midwives dedication to engage with harm reduction strategies intended to lower the chance of families birthing unassisted.
As a midwifery-led organization, NBSC’s short and long term goals reflect the tenets of the midwifery model of care, and are orientated towards strengthening interprofessional collaboration and enhancing the wellbeing of birthing families and providers through mutual aid and community care.
Our Values
We acknowledge that individual birthing communities hold innate knowledge around the political and social circumstances that impact support for vaginal breech birth and are best placed to identify the needs and challenges that are unique to them.

We commit to support individual birth communities to utilize NBSC resources, guidelines and strategies to build support for vaginal breech birth as they see fit while upholding the spirit of NBSC’s values.
We commit to continually uphold the tenets and ethics of the midwifery model of care, and the human rights of birthing people to make autonomous, informed decisions.

We commit to be accountable to our communities and each other, to steward NBSC’s projects and vision through consensus decision making and to act in good faith to preserve access to vaginal breech birth.
We commit to form and sustain collaborative, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive relationships with our communities, within a non-hierarchical, mutual aid framework.

We commit to provide support and mentorship to new breech providers across professional designations and the formation of collaborative breech teams to ensure continuous access to skilled breech providers in all birth settings across Canada.
